While living on the Oregon coast in 1982, I purchased my first Montgomery 17. It was built for me by Jerry, and I sailed on Newport Bay and a memorable trip up in the San Juan Islands. My wife and I eventually moved to the central coast of California where life got busy with work and a new baby, and I eventually donated my Montgomery 17 to the local Boy Scouts. But, I knew in my heart that I would eventually own another Montgomery 17.
In 2009 I purchased my next Montgomery 17, Betty Lou, from a fellow in San Diego. I changed the name, with Neptune's help, to Tramontana, which comes from the old Italian compass rose where the cardinal points all had names. It's Italian meaning is North Wind, or winds from the Alps. I sailed on Cachuma Lake, and then for many years at the Havasu Lake gathering that became the Havasu Pocket Cruiser Convention.
In 2014, after retiring from a 35 year career with the Forest Service, we made our move up to Orcas Island. Two weeks after moving to Orcas, I made my first cruise with three friends I had met at HPCC. It was the start of what dreams are made of. In the five years that I have lived on Orcas, I have explored numerous marine parks and islands in the Salish Sea. Tramontana has taken me from the northern most Gulf Island to as far south in the Puget Sound as a sailboat can access. In the last five years, Tramontana and I have navigated the northwest waters from May through September in some of the most beautiful cruising grounds in the world.
I have a YouTube channel with videos from several of my cruising trips in the in the Pacific Northwest. You can find the channel by searching YouTube at David Young Montgomery 17.
